Erika Stark

Erika Stark

It is a two-step image of a Mermaid/Siren's intention; mermaids were believed to be wretched creatures of beauty, luring poor sailors and pirates with seduction into the depths below, with a more insidious nature. Much like sirens, mermaids will sing to people or to gods to enchant them, distracting them from their work and causing people to walk off a ship's deck or to run their ship aground. Other stories depict mermaids squeezing the life out of drowning men while attempting to rescue them. They are also said to carry humans down to their underwater kingdoms. In Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid", it is said that mermaids forget that humans cannot breathe underwater, while other stories say they drown men out of spite, while still other fables portray mermaids as benevolent toward men. This singing chant is probably a curse to the mermaid as well. This piece illustrates the sheer beauty of the beasts.

Marcia Masino's funky art stool Marcia Masino One of the treasures is a music themed stool painted by Marcia Masino, she says "When I first saw the old funky wooden stool I imagined a musician seated on it and playing a guitar. I decided to use a music theme, painting it ivory and black to represent the black and white stripes of sheet music then added actual sheet music collaged onto the seat. I also used a deep pumpkin colour to make it contemporary and fun to look at."

This one-of-a-kind stool is about 33 cm wide (top) and 58.4 cm high (13" wide and 23" high).
